Frequently asked questions

F.A.Q

Is it a challenging event?

The WUU2K is a very challenging event. I'm not going to sugar coat it in any way at all. Do not enter this run unless you have trained for it sufficiently. As a gauge, most will finish the 43km Marathon in around 6-7 hours, and around 8-9 hours for the Ultra. Even the new 21km course is a challenge with over 1000m of elevation to contend with. Also remember that it IS the middle of Winter in Wellington so ANYTHING can happen (just ask 2021 runners).
Train with all of this in mind.

Will I make the cut-off for the 62km?

If you've trained for the event, you'll understand there are a lot of hills to run up, and down. The first 62km event cut-off is 12.45pm at the top of Tip Track, so this gives you 6 hours and 15 minutes to run around 34km. It's a tough 34km though. You then have until 3.45pm to get through Tawatawa Aid Station.
Run the flats and downhills. Walk the ups and you will finish this event.

How far is it exactly?

The Marathon is around 43km, so slightly over the usual 42km marathon. The Ultra event is close to 62km. The 21km event is pretty close to 21k!

What's the total elevation?

Over the Marathon course you will take in around 2km in elevation
The Ultra Marathon course is close to 3km in elevation
The 21km is around 1200m

Will I receive a Medal?

Every finisher will receive a custom-made WUU2K medal.

What will be at the Aid Stations?

There will be Tailwind nutrition, Water, Soft Drinks, Vegemite/Pics Peanut butter sandwiches, chips, biscuits, sweets, fruit, and hopefully some home-baked goods. That, plus a lot of the vollies enjoy dressing up, so be prepared for an entertaining ride!

It's looking like nice sunny weather on race day - Do I need all my comp gear?

No matter what the weather forecast, you will still need your mandatory comp gear. Either wearing it on the day, or tucked away in your pack in case you do need it. Trust me when I say anything can happen and you DO NOT want to be in a position where you need it, and don't have it.

What do I need in my First Aid kit?

If you are worried about not having the right kit, simply purchase a AIDE VOID or VOID R1 from AIDEPORT in Nelson. Both kits have all you need plus the R1 has the additional emergency blanket.

Do I need a hood on my seam sealed jacket?

YES. You need a fully hooded jacket, seam sealed, windproof/waterproof jacket. Just think if you're stuck in an exposed area, it's bucketing down, -1 wind, and you have no hood. Slightly uncomfortable.

'Why should I enter this?'

Life is a challenge. In life we accept this fact. For an event like this where training is an essential ingredient, life flows along parallel to this. We train for life, so running this event is like an essential part of the learning curve of life. Challenge yourself to achieve the somewhat unachievable....and reap the rewards.
